Seguin Island Light has three distinctions among the lighthouses of Maine. It is the second oldest lighthouse in Maine, having been established in 1795. It is the highest beacon of all of Maine’s lighthouses at 186 feet above sea level. 140 feet of that is thanks to the height of Seguin Island itself. It is the only lighthouse in Maine that continues to use its original first order Fresnel Lens.
Even though the lighthouse was established in 1795, the tower and light keeper’s house that stands today and is pictured in the painting above was built in 1857.
The painting depicts a view of Seguin Island Lighthouse from Seguin Cove below. The island is covered in beach roses, berry bushes, and tall grass which has turned brown from a long dry summer. The tips of spruce trees in the lower right foreground give a hint as to how tall the island is and how much of it is out of frame.
This painting was done as part of my quest to visit and paint all of Maine’s beautiful and iconic lighthouses. You can follow my progress at my Maine Lighthouse Paintings blog.
