The day marker on Little Mark Island near Harpswell, Maine is a 50′ stone tower built on the highest point of the island, which is 40′ above sea level. The tower is hollow and also served as a refuge for any shipwreck survivors that could make it to the island. It would have been stocked with supplies and firewood to keep the castaways fed and warm until help could arrive.
It was built in 1827 matching the design of a similar tower built near Cape Elizabeth, Maine sixteen years earlier. A light was added to it in 1927.
Although not strictly a lighthouse by definition, I have included it in my quest to visit and paint all of Maine’s iconic lighthouses. You can follow my progress by visiting my blog at MaineLighthousePaintings.com/
