The 1892 Annual Lighthouse Board reported the Kennebec River, “…not only has the sea fogs, which extend to Bath, but its own river fog or mist, which is dense and at times low down.”
This painting captures the “low down fog” obscuring the opposite bank of the Kennebec River near Phippsburg, Maine. Squirrel Point Lighthouse stands on the sloping banks of Arrowsic Island. New spring grass grows among the still dormant bushes. Lichen can be seen on the lighthouse’s bell house roof and on the rocks in the foreground. Sargassum lapping up against the shore shows how close the lighthouse is to the water.
Spring Point Light was built in 1898 as part of a network of navigational aids guiding ships up and down the Kennebec river to and from Bath, Maine.
The railings and platform around the lantern were added in 1899, and the bell house was added in 1902.
This painting is part of my quest to visit and paint all of Maine’s beautiful and iconic lighthouses. You can follow my progress at my Maine Lighthouse Paintings blog.
