This is my first painting of Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. I painted this shortly after I moved to nearby Portland. This is a very famous lighthouse, and locals claim it is the most photographed lighthouse in the world. It has been painted numerous times. I wanted to do something a bit different so I took a photo standing at the base of the brick-lined tower looking up at its beacon.

It is a highly detailed painting done with thin washes of milk paint, a Colonial-era paint I was experimenting with at the time.

This was the first Maine lighthouse painting I did before I decided to start my quest to visit and paint all of Maine’s beautiful and iconic lighthouses. You can follow my progress at my Maine Lighthouse Paintings blog.
