The subject of this painting is a ubiquitous scene in Portland, Maine on the Maine State Pier. The “City of Portland” fireboat and Casco Bay Ferries have made the Maine State Pier their home for as long as I’ve lived in Portland. This scene, just a couple of blocks from where I lived when I first moved to Portland, caught my eye right away and I knew I had to paint it.
I loved the primary colors of this seascape right away. The bright reds of the fireboat and the vibrant yellows of the ferries against the marble blue of the water in Portland harbor made this an irresistible scene to paint.
