In the mid 2000’s a group of friends and I shared a large storage space on Union Wharf in Portland, Maine. We used the space as artist studios, even though it was uninsulated and very cold in the Winter. Despite this I went there almost every day. The wharf was a constant inspiration for me and shows up in another of my artworks, Seagull on Union Wharf.
Boat Bumpers is another painting inspired by that location. Lobster boats line up and down docks with with the gear waiting on the wh 2007arf. Ropes, bumpers, buoys, nets and other items would be draped over the pilings of the pier.
One day these bumpers caught my eye, with the flourescent green and orange paint still vivid even thoug it was flaking off, showing the black underneath.
There is one very accidental detail in this painting that wasn’t noticed until years after I finished it. My wife was walking by it one day and she noticed that I spelled my own name wrong when I was painting my signature. It’s too late to change and serves as a reminder that I should always be concentrating on my paintings, especially when signing my own name.
Original Painting
The original artwork was painted with multiple watercolor washes over a detailed pencil drawing. It is 12 x 16 inches on hardboard panel and includes a simple metal frame.
